Job Description

Summary/objective

Under the supervision of the Manager of MEPC, execute on all matters related to carpentry across a 350-acre campus with buildings totaling over 500,000 square feet. The Carpenter will perform skilled carpentry work as part of constructing, maintaining, repairing, or modifying buildings and facilities throughout the School’s campus.

Schedule

Generally, Monday through Friday 7am – 3pm with some Saturday work as needed. Seasonally respond to need for snow removal, athletic field support, emergency closings, and other special circumstances. Potential to be considered for on call rotation.

  • Participates in the execution of routine maintenance schedules for carpentry on campus.
  • Maintain and improve the integrity of the School’s buildings and facilities, etc.
  • Performs and completes a variety of carpentry tasks with quality workmanship to construct, maintain, repair, or modify buildings or facilities; tasks may include measuring and marking materials; repairing and replacing floors, roofs, wall cladding, or doors; installing partitions, walls, and doors; erecting scaffolding; and building wood structures.
  • Perform general maintenance on both commercial and residential facilities such as repairing doors & windows, installing blinds or shelving, etc. 
  • Safely and efficiently operates a variety of power and hand tools to complete jobs accurately and to specifications; such tools may include hammers, saws, drills, planers, and mortising machines.
  • Protects furnishings, equipment, and other property during carpentry repairs by properly covering or removing items.
  • Restores worksites to original condition by removing debris, scaffolding, and equipment used during the project and returning property, furnishings and equipment to proper location.
  • Develops and maintains records regarding time spent and materials used for specific jobs.
  • Provides status reports including the status of work projects, materials used, and hours spent performing labor to supervisor or other appropriate project lead.
  • Performs spot checks on equipment to ensure proper working condition; services tools and equipment as needed and returns damaged items for repair or replacement.
  • Ensures compliance with federal regulations, policies, and laws regarding construction, repairs, and proper environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, or use of chemical substances.
  • Follows standard safety precautions; adheres to operator’s instructions when using power tools; wears recommended protective equipment such as goggles, hearing protectors, and/or work gloves.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work environment

  • Typically, in various residential dormitories, classrooms, dining hall, function facilities, athletics facilities, offices, and various other indoor spaces to include crawl spaces, attics, and other small, confined spaces.
  • Frequently, out of doors in all weather conditions known to the New England environment.

Physical demands

  • Remain standing and walking for 8 hours per day regularly and up to 12 hours per day as needed seasonally.
  • Ability to go up and down flights of steps.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull heavy objects.
  • Ability to stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift.
  • Ability to safely operate complex machinery.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move, without assistance 10 pounds at a time regularly, 50 pounds frequently, and 100+ pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to traverse various areas of the facility (including unpaved areas, dirt paths, uneven terrain, etc.) to conduct inspections and execute grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to inclement weather (rain, snow, sleet, freezing temperatures, etc.).
  • Communication skills using the spoken and written word.
  • Ability to see with normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal range.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

Required education and experience

  • Education sufficient to read, write, and speak as needed for the job.
  • Possess and maintain valid driver’s license.

  Additional eligibility requirements

  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
  • Able to successfully complete CHRI, CORI, and SORI checks.
