Job Description

Logging Truck Driver and Chip Van Operator Summary/Objective Drives and operates both a logging truck and a grapple truck to haul logs and wood chips efficiently and safely to designated company or customer locations in Northern California. Ensures the safe and efficient operation of both logging truck and grapple truck, performing maintenance and safety checks as required. Essential Functions Log Truck Complete pre-trip/post-trip inspections of truck and cargo. Monitor condition of equipment and report all issues immediately. Load and unload trailers by operating equipment as needed. Drive truck and trailer to haul logs from logging sites to log deck or mill. Follow all customer designated safety procedures. Deliver products and proper paperwork to customers in a courteous and timely manner. Apply knowledge of commercial driving and skill in maneuvering vehicle at varying speeds in difficult situations, such as heavy traffic, inclement weather, or in tight loading/unloading areas off highway and private dirt roads. Abide by all Company, DOT, State, and Federal transportation safety regulations. Cut or remove pieces of bark from load prior to transporting using various small tools including hand ax. Ensure load is properly secured and weight is evenly distributed on truck and trailer. Check binders and wrappers to ensure the load is secure. Inspect tractor, trailer, and equipment for defects and safe operating condition before (pre-trip) and after trips, and submit a driver's daily vehicle inspection report on the condition no later than the end of each day. Perform basic preventative maintenance to ensure fluid levels and tire pressures are maintained. Brake adjustments are the responsibility of the driver. Maintain records required for compliance with State and Federal regulations, including driver's logs, records of fuel purchases, mileage records, and other records required by law or by Company standards. Ensure that all shipping documentation (bills of lading, weight tickets, etc.) required to move with shipment are available for inspection, and that signed bills of lading for proof of delivery are turned in daily. Report all accidents/incidents involving driver or company equipment immediately after incident occurs to Supervisor. Report any delays due to breakdown, weather or traffic conditions, or other emergencies. Report if there are regular delays or abnormal delays in getting unloaded or loaded, or in the event of irregularities relating to pick up, and/or delivery of logs and/or heavy equipment. Participate, support, and comply with all health, safety initiatives, and requirements. Continually follow all DOT requirements. Maintain equipment (chains, binders, safety equipment) to ensure it is in proper working order. Chip Van Operate a rear-mounted log loader boom to unload, move material for processing. Experience with Grapple Attachment Required. Ability to drive and operate a Grapple Truck with a trailer. All work takes place outside on site, in all weather conditions. Completely and accurately fill out daily paperwork. Perform selective tree thinning. Have good judgment regarding site, terrain, and weather conditions for safe equipment operation. Assist with other operations at the job site such as maintenance of other equipment. Segment felled trees into individual logs using a chainsaw. Grade felled timber using tape measure and lumber crayons. Have substantial mechanical intelligence and experience troubleshooting and repairing small engines, heavy equipment maintenance, and/or vehicle maintenance. Perform multiple inspections throughout the day on equipment to check and maintain proper fluid levels, performance of the equipment, etc., using the company checklist as a guideline. Report equipment needs and hazards to supervisor. Continuously check equipment (seat belt, fire extinguisher, lights, etc.) to ensure it is working properly and safely. Survey, evaluate, and take measures to ensure the work area is safe from any dangers (powerlines, utilities, co-workers, etc.). Inspect all attachments to the machinery to ensure that they are operational and take appropriate steps to correct. Follow work order instructions from supervisor. Ensure that the assigned job site is left in a safe condition. Maintain good housekeeping on equipment. Chainsaw experience is required. Operate a chainsaw when needed. Understand and follow oral instructions; communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and the public effectively. Comply with all safety policies and procedures and OSHA regulations. Comply with all company policies and procedures. Travel and work overtime when required. Have a strong work ethic. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications A minimum of two years related experience, hauling between 80k to 100k weight. Class "A" Drivers' License, current DOT physical examination card, and clean DMV record required. Log hauling experience is preferred. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure or legal manuals. Ability to complete/write regular documents related to the truck and delivery of materials. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and calculate load weight. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to speak professionally and courteously with customers and staff at delivery points. Ability to remain focused in a busy environment. Supervisory Responsibilities None Work Environment All work is performed outside in various weather conditions. Exposure to all types of terrain, nature elements, loud noise, and dust. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 12 hours (intrastate); must be able to shift a manual transmission and operate foot pedals; must be able to perform bending to dig, pick up and or throw binders and wrappers with chains. Must be able to enter and exit the vehicle's cab 8 to 10 times a day or more. Cab floor level is generally from 36 to 66 inches above ground level with entry and exit achieved with the assistance of various configurations of steps and handholds; also requires bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, crouching, reaching (including above shoulders), pulling, pushing, and balancing. Must be able to lift and move up to 10 lbs. Must be able to spend at least 85% of the day sitting, 15% of the day walking on surfaces such as wood, dirt, asphalt, and metal which are sometimes slippery and wet. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May use a double bit ax or shovel to dig. Ability to adjust trailer brakes by squatting or kneeling using small hand tools. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, moving equipment, and truck vibration. The road conditions may at times be slippery and/or dusty from dirt. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Ability to work and drive in a variety of weather conditions. Travel Required Position travels outside the local area but usually within Northern California. Required Education and Experience Minimum of 2-3 years experience operating a grapple, knuckle boom, or log loader. Minimum of two years related experience, hauling between 80k to 100k weight. Class A CDL, current DOT physical examination card, and clean DMV record required. Chainsaw experience is required. Preferred Education and Experience High School education or equivalent. Forestry or heavy equipment operation experience preferred. Additional Eligibility Requirements Must be able to drive standard transmission. Must hold required commercial driver's license appropriate for weight of vehicle to be operated. Must pass drug testing as required by federal and/or state department(s) of transportation regulations.
