As a Machine Shop Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the setup, operation, and optimization of machinery, ensuring quality control, and providing technical support for manufacturing operations.
Process Engineering & Optimization:
- Develop, implement, and optimize manufacturing processes for machining operations, including milling, turning, drilling, and grinding.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to current processes to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and improve quality.
- Select appropriate materials, tools, and machinery for production based on design specifications and product requirements.
Technical Support & Troubleshooting:
- Provide technical support to machinists and operators to ensure smooth production runs.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and resolve problems related to tooling, setup, and machine performance.
- Work closely with the maintenance team to ensure proper maintenance and repair of machines to minimize downtime.
CAD/CAM Programming & Design:
- Use CAD and CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam, or similar) to create part models, toolpaths, and detailed machining instructions for CNC machines.
- Develop and modify CNC programs for complex parts based on engineering drawings and specifications.
- Collaborate with design engineers to ensure that designs are manufacturable and meet tolerance requirements.
Quality Control & Inspection:
- Ensure that machined parts meet dimensional specifications and quality standards using precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, CMM).
- Develop and implement inspection plans to ensure product quality and compliance with industry standards.
- Conduct root cause analysis of defects and non-conformances, and implement corrective actions.
Project Management & Coordination:
- Coordinate with production teams, including operators and machine setup personnel, to ensure timely and accurate production.
- Monitor project timelines and progress, ensuring that engineering and machining tasks are completed on schedule.
- Support cost estimation and budget management for machining operations and projects.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain detailed records of machine setup, tooling, production data, and process improvements.
- Prepare and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for machine operations and safety.
- Provide regular reports on production efficiency, machine performance, and quality control metrics to management.
Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure that all machining operations are conducted in accordance with company safety protocols and industry regulations.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment by ensuring all safety procedures are followed and that machinery is operated correctly.
- Conduct safety audits and assist in training staff on machine shop safety procedures and best practices.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., CNC programming, machining certifications) are a plus.
Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a machine shop environment, with a strong background in CNC machining, manual machining, or related manufacturing processes.
- Hands-on experience with CNC machines, milling machines, lathes, grinders, and other precision machining equipment.
- Experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam, Siemens NX) and CNC programming.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, and materials.
- Proficient in technical problem-solving and troubleshooting of machining operations.
- Experience in using precision measurement instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMM).
- Solid knowledge of manufacturing quality control processes and standards.
- Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100) and safety regulations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with machine operators, engineers, and management.
Optional but preferred:
- CNC Programming and Operation certification.
- Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or other process improvement certifications.
- Experience in aerospace, automotive, Firearms or precision manufacturing industries.
- Experience working with multi-axis CNC machines, robotics, or automation systems in a manufacturing setting.
- Knowledge of ERP or MRP systems for production scheduling and inventory management.
- Experience in managing or leading teams in a production environment.
