Job Description

Sarmal, an innovative biotech company based in San Diego, California, is seeking a highly skilled R&D Scientist specializing in Enzyme Engineering to join our cutting-edge research team. We are developing revolutionary genomics platforms that aim to transform the fields of genetic testing and sequencing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and optimize enzymes for our proprietary TEEM and FLASH platforms
  • Develop and conduct enzyme-substrate interaction studies
  • Lead research projects focused on improving enzyme performance and stability
  • Perform protein modifications to enhance enzymatic activity and specificity
  • Develop and execute rate improvement assays under various conditions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to advance project goals
  • Contribute to the development of intellectual property and patent applications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field with a focus on enzyme engineering, purification and assay development/optimization
  • 5+ years of post-doctoral experience in enzyme research and development
  • Extensive hands-on experience with protein isolation and purification techniques
  • Strong understanding of enzymatic assays and reaction buffer optimizations
  • Proven expertise in protein modifications and enzyme kinetics
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute complex enzyme engineering experiments
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industry experience in biotechnology or pharmaceutical sectors
  • Extensive experience working with nucleic acid polymerases and modifying enzymes
  • Strong background in modified nucleotides and their impact on enzyme activity
  • Familiarity with next-generation sequencing technologies and their enzymatic foundations
  • Experience with enzyme reaction optimization
  • Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or patents in enzyme engineering
  • Experience in project management and team leadership
