The Diabetes Research Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant 3 (A) position. The incumbent explores innovations to research and strives to improve implementation and family outcomes. The Research Assistant 3 (A) ensures compliance with University policies, rules, and regulations to meet federal, state, and local standards pertaining to safety and ethics.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                           

  • Plans and implements research experiments, according to research protocols, to assure high-quality scientific results in support of applicable project goals.

  • Participates in assessing the feasibility of implementing innovations.

  • Assesses data trends and develops reports and presentations.

  • Supports the initiation of new research by reviewing and synthesizing literature.

  • Oversees inventory of supplies and equipment and places orders in a timely fashion.

  • Assists in the preparation of scientific papers, reports, and manuscripts.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                         

  • High School diploma or equivalent required

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

This position will be in the DRI Histology Laboratory, supporting research by preparing human and animal tissue samples for microscopic analysis. Duties include tissue fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining. Operate specialized equipment (e.g., microtomes, stainers), maintain quality control standards, manage reagents and supplies, and ensure general lab upkeep. Experience in the in the techniques described above is required 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Specimen Processing: Receive, log, and fix tissue samples from surgical, biopsy, or autopsy sources.

  • Embedding & Sectioning: Embed tissues in paraffin and cut thin sections using a microtome or cryostat.

  • Slide Preparation: Mount stained sections onto slides for microscopic analysis.

  • Staining: Perform routine and special stains, including immunohistochemistry, to highlight cellular structures.

  • Quality Control: Monitor reagent performance, equipment function, and staining consistency.

  • Data Management: Accurately document specimen details and procedures in the lab information system.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Clean and maintain histology instruments regularly.

  • Previous experience working in a histology lab using the methods described in the section above.
