Job Description

Supplemental Health Care has partnered with a school district in Summerville, SC to hire a Teacher for the Visually Impaired for summer school and the 25/26 school year.

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides specialized instruction and support services to students with visual impairments, including those who are blind, to ensure access to the general education curriculum and development of essential skills for independence. The TVI collaborates with general education teachers, special education staff, families, and related service providers to promote academic and functional success in diverse educational settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide direct and consultative instructional services to students with visual impairments (ages birth–21) in various settings, including general education classrooms, resource rooms, or homes.
• Assess students' functional vision, learning media, and Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) needs.
• Develop and implement Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals specific to vision-related needs.
• Adapt and modify classroom materials into accessible formats such as braille, large print, tactile graphics, or digital formats.
• Collaborate, train, and support with general and special education staff to ensure inclusive access to curriculum and learning environments.
• Maintain accurate records, document student progress, and participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary teams, and professional development.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Valid State Teaching License with Special Education Endorsement in Visual Impairment (Teacher of the Visually Impaired endorsement)
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education, Visual Impairment Education, or related field
• Knowledge of braille (Unified English Braille), assistive technology for visual impairment, and the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC)

Preferred:

• Experience working with students with multiple disabilities
• Certification in braille (e.g., through the National Certification in Unified English Braille - NCLB)
• Experience with Learning Media Assessments and Functional Vision Assessments
