Position Description

Traveling Biomedical Equipment Specialists are responsible for:

  • Driving the Mobile Examination Center (MEC), which is 38 feet in length and over 26,000 lbs. in weight, to various study site locations. Obtaining a Class B CDL driving license to do so. Training to be provided.
  • Parking and placement of the MECs in compound formation, leveling and set up the vehicles for the start of data collection at a stand including utility hookups
  • Setting up medical equipment at study locations
  • Performing necessary quality control on the medical equipment upon arrival and set up
  • Ensuring that the MECs are well-maintained including regular servicing and maintenance
  • Ensuring that the equipment within the MEC is well-maintained and calibrated (if applicable)
  • Providing technical support to the clinical staff for the medical equipment
  • Routinely performing inventory of materials and supplies while MECs are in operation at stands, and communicate regularly with the RTI study leadership with inventory updates
  • Attending project training, complete RTI required courses and certification by end of training
  • Following all procedures in the Manual of Procedures
  • With training, performing audiometry and vision examination activities
  • Managing and maintaining equipment, tablet, and supplies properly
  • Providing all completed forms to supervisor, as requested
  • This position involves lifting equipment weighing up to 50 pounds

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years old
  • Have completed a High School Diploma or GED
  • Possess Biomedical Engineering Technician Training through the military or college
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement or must have equivalent military training in biomedical/electrical equipment
  • Experience working on medical equipment in a clinical environment
  • Minimum of 1 year of Biomedical Equipment experience
  • Must possess knowledge of maintenance actions: technical inspections, repairs and troubleshooting, calibration and QA/QC
  • Medical laboratory equipment maintenance, repair, and calibration experience required

Preferred Qualifications for Ideal Candidates:

  • Associate's Degree with a focus in bioinstrumentation, biomedical electronics, and biomedical technology
  • 3 Years of Biomedical Equipment Technician or Military Biomedical Equipment Training
  • Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) preferred
  • Certifications must be current and maintained, including at least one of the following:
  • FMCNA Biomedical Technician Technical Certification Program
  • Biomedical Industry Technical Certification
  • Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI)
  • Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET)

Project Details

RTI International is seeking part time Traveling Biomedical Equipment Specialists Drivers (BMES) on the NHANES Project.

The Data Practice area within the Social, Statistical & Environmental Sciences (SSES) at RTI International has future openings for part-time Traveling Biomedical Equipment Specialists (BMES) for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey project (NHANES), sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NHANES involves in-person household interviews and health examinations conducted in a Mobile Examination Center (MEC).

The BMES will be primarily responsible for driving the MECs to study locations (stands), placement, leveling and set up the vehicles for the start of data collection at a stand, utility hookups, vehicle inspections and vehicle maintenance, QA, inspection, maintenance, and calibration of the medical equipment inside the MECs, and vehicle closeout at each stand. Equipment for the following clinical exams will be housed in the MECs: blood pressure, anthropometrics, hearing, vision, spirometry, dental, osteoporosis, and biospecimen collection and processing. The BMES will oversee equipment and supply inventories for the MEC and all exams.

As a member of the small team, the position will be cross trained to complete limited data collection activities within their scope and qualifications (i.e., assist in collecting body measurements, audiometry or vision measurements, record oral health assessment), and may be required to assist laboratory staff in the preparation of specimen shipments.

This position requires full-time continuous travel for up to 40 weeks a year, with the potential for more, and for the BMES to maintain the MECs and the medical equipment inside in safe and working conditions. In addition to the certifications and qualifications below, the candidate must be available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week while on travel, including evenings and weekends and be willing to commit to work for at least 1 year. The BMES will attend project training and be supervised by a Biomedical Engineer.

Work Schedule

  • The initial data collection period is expected to be two years, from January 2025 through December 2026 and anticipated to continue at least until 2030
  • On average, you will be on duty 40 hours per week for up to 48 weeks per year
  • On average, you will be on duty 5 days each week based on the survey participant schedule
  • The majority of this work is anticipated to be weekdays during daytime hours. between 7AM and 7PM driven by the data collection schedule. Staff are informed of the upcoming week’s schedule each Thursday

Training Details

Biomedical Equipment Specialists Drivers are required to complete trainings which include:

  • Successfully pass project required trainings (a mix of virtual, online, and in-person).
  • Virtual and Online trainings completed throughout December 2024 and early January 2025 prior to in-person training.
  • In-person training dates in Research Triangle Park, NC, January 9-27, 2025. Individual dates may vary. Data collection starts February 2025.
  • Refresher and mid-year trainings are expected.
  • Attendance at all trainings is mandatory.
  • Up to 80 hours of paid online/virtual training.
  • In-person training for up to 8 hours/day will be paid.
  • Travel per diem and accommodations will be covered for in-person training.
