Salary: $87,000-$95,000 annual/salary

Position Purpose:  The Video & Digital Storyteller (VDS) is responsible for the creative development, storyboarding, shooting, editing, and packaging/marketing of various long- and short-form films and digital content that highlights/showcases key Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton programs, profiles, traditions, annual events and other activities. The VDS is an instrumental member of the communications team in supporting SHS brand and messaging, sustaining and growing internal/external engagement, and helping meet both revenue and recruitment objectives and overarching institutional goals. This role is responsible for the creative direction of each video, from idea conception and developing the story arc, to interviewing a wide range of subjects—from educators to students, to parents and other community members. The VDS must have an outgoing, curious demeanor with an innate talent/ability to put interviewees at ease, including “teasing out”—through potential multiple takes—thoughtful viewpoints and soundbites with the goal of eliciting an emotional response from the viewer/audience. In addition to a mastery of video storytelling, the successful candidate will be an experienced content strategist and communications professional who is comfortable working across a variety of storytelling platforms, including overseeing, managing, and posting to the school’s Vimeo account. This role shares responsibility with other COMMs team members in the following: covering/photographing select SHS events; assisting in managing and posting to the school’s social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, and X); and, on occasion, updating the school’s website.

Specific Expectations for Communications Staff:  In addition to duties and essential job functions listed in job descriptions, the following responsibilities are expected of all employees in the Communications Department: Professional development as required and approved by your supervisor, and attendance of, or participation in, mandatory meetings and/or events as directed by your supervisor including but not limited to Director’s Days. All employees will be paid appropriately and according to current law.

Essential Functions

Digital Content Strategy, Production, & Fulfillment

  • Working closely with the Dir., Communications & PR, create and execute a digital content strategy that supports internal and external school communications and storytelling through visual media (video/photography) for use across multiple channels and platforms.
  • Partner with and provide support to key institutional programs—Admissions, Advancement, Office of Mission, Culture, & Strategy and/or other key departments and staff—to develop, film, and produce high-quality video content that supports the SHS narrative and aids in meeting recruitment and fundraising targets.
  • Document via video/photography select SHS events and activities, and create timely, related "packaging” and repackaging as needed (photo galleries, video/multimedia website news stories or content, social media posts, etc.).
  • Review, track, and summarize metrics and data related to produced/disseminated visual media products, and supply ongoing reports to COMMs and key department collaborators to gauge impact, making specific recommendations to adjust content strategy and execution to improve views on videos; on occasion, this may require A/B testing on film shorts and/or digital content on SHS social media channels to increase reach, engagement, and conversions.
  • Contribute to and update ongoing New Media Projects calendar/project tracking software, sharing access with key collaborators and partners across campus.
  • Strategize new projects and visual content that supports COMMs news media and community outreach and furthers the SHS brand, school reputation, and competitive position in local/regional/national markets.

Other Responsibilities

  • Provide support for high-profile activities and events of the COMMs and Advancement teams (e.g., Auction, Alumni events, other).
  • Attend, present, or participate in senior leadership meetings, Parent Association meetings, etc., as needed.
  • Share guidance/support as needed/requested to colleagues and students in areas of visual storytelling mediums, legal standards, and best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dir., Communications & PR or Chief Communications Officer.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (related field preferred, i.e.., Journalism, Film & Video, English, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing).
  • Minimum 3-5 years of professional experience crafting/producing high quality video and film content to engage audiences in a digital format, taking projects from creative inception to completion.
  • Seasoned in all aspects of artistic and technical film production, including storyboarding, shot list direction, setting up interviews, lighting/sound, editing, color grading, sound mixing, animation, and motion graphics.
  • Demonstrated expertise with web/mobile visual production tools and equipment, including usage of our suite of Sony mirrorless cameras and GoPro/drones, podcast recording equipment, and the Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, Lightroom, Photoshop, etc).
  • Strong knowledge of filmmaking best practices and standards, copyright/legal restrictions in terms of appropriate music licensing, copyrighted image use, etc., and analytic tools.
  • Familiarity and some experience with motion graphics/animation highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects and consistently produce quality work in deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Experience in educational or nonprofit industry not required, but desired.
  • A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the school as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools and professional behavior based on it.
  • Creative, artistic, and collaborative; strong understanding and belief in the power of visual medium to convey key concepts and messages that lead to action and engagement.
  • Outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to keep to a plan but pivot as needed.
  • Able to communicate effectively with school representatives, parents, students, alumni, donors, and others, and committed to delivering excellent customer service always.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Works in a fast-paced environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
  • Must comply with all state vaccination requirements and show proof of vaccination including but not limited to COVID-19 or proof of eligibility for exemption.
  • Must be able to regularly move safely and comfortably over a 63-acre campus.
  • Be able to regularly lift up to 10 lbs and on occasion, safely lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment and intermittently in outside weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
  • Available and willing to work evenings and some weekends, on occasion.
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time (up to 10 hours or more per day).
  • Communicate effectively with the school population and the public.
